FameRank: 6

"George Dario Marino Franchitti", Order of the British Empire/MBE is a retired United Kingdom/British race car/racing driver. He won the IndyCar Series four times; in 2007 IndyCar Series season/2007, and three more times in 2009 IndyCar Series season/2009, 2010 IndyCar Series season/2010 and 2011 IndyCar Series season/2011 and a three time Indianapolis 500 champion in 2007 Indianapolis 500/2007, 2010 Indianapolis 500/2010 and 2012 Indianapolis 500/2012. Franchitti started his career in his native Great Britain in the early 1990s, competing in Formula Vauxhall and British Formula Three Championship/Formula Three, and was also the winner of the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award in 1992. After Franchitti did not secure a single-seater drive in 1995, he was contracted by the Mercedes-AMG/AMG team to compete in touring cars, in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft/DTM and its successor, the International Touring Car Championship. Despite two seasons with relative success, the series folded at the end of the 1996 International Touring Car Championship season/1996 season, again leaving Franchitti without a drive. Mercedes placed Franchitti in Champ Car/CART in 1997 CART season/1997 with the Hogan Racing team.

I could see him coming. He was coming up quickly and I really don't know what happened. But it all came down to that, as usual, last two feet, didn't it?

We just cannot continue to have these things happen.

I actually thought it was closer than that. It was close enough.

I had the clutch pedal depressed, but the car slowly started to creep forward and the engine stalled. So another mechanical problem took us from a race that I feel we had the car to win. We just cannot continue to have these things happen.

I'll have to (fill) him with alcohol (today) to get the real truth.

It's looking difficult now. (Wheldon) and his team keep doing this kind of a job.

I lost a good friend here six years ago and this means a lot to all of us who were friends of Greg Moore.

A wheel bearing went in the rear suspension, which I think is the same problem as Tony (Kanaan). It almost put me into the wall and almost put Tony in the wall as well. It's unfortunate and the ArcaEx team deserves better. It's the same problem we had at Nashville.

I was not very happy with the way things were going.
