"John Clifford Shaw" (1922–1991) was a systems programmer at the RAND Corporation. He is a coauthor of the first artificial intelligence program, the Logic Theorist, and was one of the developers of Information Processing Language, a programming language of the 1950s. It is considered the true "father" of the JOSS language. One of the most significant events that occurred in the programming was the development of the concept of list processing by Allen Newell, Herbert A. Simon and Cliff Shaw during the development of the language Information Processing Language/IPL-V. He invented the linked list, on which almost all of computer technology now depends.

The concepts of Joss are pure, and express attitudes and technical ideals.

To devise an information processing system capable of getting along on its own - it must handle its own problems of programming, bookkeeping, communication and coordination with its users. It must appear to its users as a single, integrated personality.

It's the little things that count, hundreds of 'em.
