FameRank: 4

"Charles-François Gounod" was a French composer, best known for his Ave Maria (Bach/Gounod)/Ave Maria, based on a work by Johann Sebastian Bach/Bach, as well as his opera Faust (opera)/Faust. Another opera by Gounod, occasionally still performed, is Roméo et Juliette.

Gounod died at Saint-Cloud in 1893, after a final revision of his twelve operas. His funeral took place ten days later at the La Madeleine, Paris/Church of the Madeleine, with the assistance of Camille Saint-Saëns to the organ and Gabriel Fauré conducting. He was buried in Paris, at the Montparnasse Cemetery.

Musical ideas sprang to my mind like a flight of butterflies, and all I had to do was to stretch out my hand to catch them.

I fight against the void. I think I've written something acceptable, and then, when I look at it again, I find it execrable.

My humiliating profession of decomposer of music.
