I don't think anybody, even Diana's closest friends ... would regard what happened ... after the crash as anything other than a hysterical reaction. It was way, way over the top.

That notion, that idea that divorce is linked to disgrace, which is effectively what Edward VIII is seen to have chosen, is riven deep in the Windsor royal family and certainly affected the Queen Mother and the Queen in her attitude, and so I think there is something very deep there, and there is no doubt that the sense of permanence of the royal family was badly shaken by that incident.
