Ang Lee
FameRank: 6

"Ang Lee" Order of Brilliant Star/OBS is a Taiwanese-born film director, screenwriter and producer working in America.

Lee's earlier films, such as The Wedding Banquet, Pushing Hands (film)/Pushing Hands, and Eat Drink Man Woman explored the relationships and conflicts between tradition and modernity, Eastern and Western. Lee also deals with repressed, hidden emotions in many of his films, including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Hulk (film)/Hulk; and Brokeback Mountain. Lee's insight into the human heart has allowed his films to transcend cultural and linguistic barriers to speak to audiences all over the world.

Lee has won the Academy Award for Best Director twice, first for Brokeback Mountain (2005) and most recently for Life of Pi (film)/Life of Pi (2012). He also won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). He is the first person of Asian American/Asian descent to win an Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for Best Director, and is the only director to win both the Golden Bear and Golden Lion multiple times.

In the past I've made movies that were pretty universally liked. You can't really hate them. You can discard them, but you can't really hate them.

[Woo is dipping into the popular Chinese historical genre with his latest project,] The War of the Red Cliff, ... Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

It's overwhelming. This is the climax.

Mainstream films have occupied Hollywood, but you can get bored very easily. It can be very repetitive, and I think now we want something fresh and something inspiring and different, daring. The mainstream film is very expensive to make and it scares people. It's made for the worldwide audience, you have to please so many people, and the business men start running the movies rather than artists.

On a Chinese film you just give orders, no one questions you. Here, you have to convince people, you have to tell them why you want to do it a certain way, and they argue with you. Democracy.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon ... just a small element in a big cultural event.

This was supposed to be my homecoming project. I'm really taking to heart how this film is performing in America.

I don't really believe in film competitions or that you can compare filmmakers. But I do believe this recognition is a great honor.
