To achieve (Taiwan) independence in a peaceful way so that there will be one (separate) country on either side of the Taiwan Strait.

By breaking his own promises, Chen is attempting to stir up the secessionist sentiments in Taiwan and create confrontations between different groups of people in the island, as well as to provoke the mainland and strain the cross-Straits relations.

If they choose a leader who advocates Taiwan independence, this timetable may well not be a question of years, but of a few dozen hours.

The timetable is in the hands of the mainland, even more so in the hands of Taiwan's new leader, and frankly speaking in the hands of Taiwan's voters.
