"Shantideva" was an 8th-century Indian Buddhist bhikkhu/monk and scholar at Nalanda and an adherent of the Madhyamaka philosophy of Nagarjuna. His name is a combination of the Sanskrit words for peace (shanti) and deity (Deva (Hinduism)/deva).
