Roman Romanov

"Roman Romanov" (born 1976) is a Lithuanian businessman of Russian origin as well as the one time, largely absentee chairman of Scottish Premier League football (soccer)/football club Heart of Midlothian F.C./Hearts. Romanov is the son of Hearts' former majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov.

Romanov joined Hearts as a non-executive director on 1 February 2005, after his father acquired a controlling interest in the company. Following the departures of George Foulkes, Baron Foulkes of Cumnock/George Foulkes and Phil Anderton on 31 October 2005, he was appointed as chairman and interim chief executive. Hearts announced at the time that Romanov would assume the title of chief executive "on a temporary basis... pending a further appointment". As of April 2009 no further appointment to that position has been made, although Campbell Ogilvie has since been promoted to the position of managing director, with responsibility for day-to-day operations of the club.

Like his father, Romanov has embarrassed the club by claiming the Scottish football authorities of conspiring against Hearts. He stated at the club's annual general meeting in April 2008 that the Scottish Premier League was a "Match fixing/fixed" league and that referees had "screwed" Hearts frequently during the 2007–08 season.

We have been disappointed with the team's performance. Results were not what they should have been.

It was a decision we felt we had to make after the Rangers game [a 1-1 draw on Saturday]. The results lately have not been at the level we expect them to be. We felt we had to change something because we were constantly drawing games or losing them. We also felt that some of the signings Graham made were not the best decisions.

In the short term many people will ask why. However, we ask our fans to judge us on the results.

Yesterday, Vladimir was in charge of negotiations to get a new manager.

If we feel we need to strengthen the coaching staff, then we'll decide, but this is a crucial part of the season and we just have to support him and make sure that he can do his job.

We expect to do it [appoint a director of football] very soon. We are still looking, but in a week or two we will make a decision. We are looking for a professional who understands football, who can spot a good player.

Vladimir would love to pick the team but he doesn't have enough knowledge to do that. It's down to professionals. What happened in January was a misunderstanding.

We owed it to the fans.
