Randy Johnson
FameRank: 8

"Randall David "Randy" Johnson", nicknamed ""The Big Unit"", is an American former left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball who played from 1988 to 2009 for six teams, primarily the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks. His 300 win club/303 career victories rank as the fifth-most by a lefthander in major league history, while his 3,000 strikeout club/4,875 strikeouts place him second all-time behind Nolan Ryan. He holds five of the seven highest single-season strikeout totals by a lefthander in modern history. Johnson won the Cy Young Award five times, second only to Roger Clemens' seven; he is one of two pitchers to win the award four consecutive times (1999-2002), and in 1999 – along with Pedro Martínez – joined Gaylord Perry in the rare feat of winning the award in both the American League/American and National Leagues. He is also one of five pitchers to hurl no-hitters in both leagues; with the second no-hitter, in 2004, he became the oldest pitcher in major league history to throw a perfect game.

I pitch with emotion.

We control our own destiny. I'm sure it'll come down to those last three games in Boston.

The more consistent I get, the more comfortable I get, it's fun to go out there and be that locked into a game. It's been a while. I've pitched some good games this year where I haven't been locked in. That's the ingredient I've been missing.

I had a long conversation with Steve Carlton. He told me that on the days he pitched, he felt it was his responsibility to make everyone around him better, to lift his teammates. That's what I try to do.

This team in here is relentless.

I've been known to do that before.

When you win, you want more of it. You can't win enough.

He made that play twice.

I threw a lot of balls and walked a lot of batters. Not something I'm proud of, but something I learned from.
