"Paul Maurice" is a former Canadian professional ice hockey player and current head coach of the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. At age 43, Maurice became the youngest coach in NHL history to coach 1,000 games. Maurice reached this milestone on November 28, 2010. Originally a defenseman in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), Maurice's playing career ended after an eye injury. Maurice formerly coached the Hartford Whalers/Hurricanes franchise from 1995–2003 and the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2006–2008. On December 3, 2008, Maurice was re-hired by the Hurricanes after the firing of Peter Laviolette, who had replaced him in 2003. On November 28, 2011 the Carolina Hurricanes announced that he had been fired for a second time.

His attitude has been outstanding. I've never sat and wondered about where his focus was.

The guys looked good out there tonight. I was really impressed with their enthusiasm and up tempo style of game the showed.

When he was at the prospects camp in July, I didn't know he was the guy from Making The Cut .

Later in his career, he was almost like another coach for us, ... He would lead and we would follow.

He led by example. The details of the game -- if you get to maybe a certain pay level or a certain point in your life where you don't have to do something, Ronnie seemed to put more stock in doing those things. That's what made him a great leader.

He could get his point across without embarrassing any of his teammates. And he was famous for taking players out for dinner, especially the new guys. He never did anything to promote himself but the players in cities he played in loved him and the fans there loved him.

If there was an issue that needed to be dealt with, he didn't need to go embarrass the player, or worse -- and you see that a lot, talking to everybody around them except the player. He'd go to the guy.

And then I thought there's a lot of pressure on him. And he'd just like to blend into all of this.

I think he should celebrate how he got here, because it's a great story, ... At the very least, now he knows he's done what he set out to do and he's getting equal consideration. He's in the group.
