Gavin was introduced to motor racing through the traditional karting route. After finishing as runner-up in the 1993 British Formula Three season/1993 British F3 series to Kelvin Burt, Gavin graduated to 1994 International Formula 3000 season/Formula 3000 in 1994 with Omegaland. He failed to score any points in the five races he contested, and subsequently opted to drop back down to F3 for 1995 British Formula Three season/1995. He managed to overcome rival Ralph Firman in the final round to snatch the title.

Currently, Oliver Gavin is driving for Corvette Racing in the American Le Mans Series with codriver Tommy Milner and endurance codriver Richard Westbrook.

It's very satisfying. We didn't have one single problem. There were things that looked like they would be problems, but we managed to keep the lid under them.

The championship is looking good. We didn't want to get in this position with having something bad happening to the sister car. You want to win it on the track.
