In the hospitality industry, you are surrounded by alcohol all the time, ... There is the social aspect to it ? the winding down after a service, working irregular hours, working under high pressure ? and the culture of drinking is enormous in the UK, with an explosion of binge drinking and of young women drinking.

The issues involved are sufficiently important that courses are now moving out of the philosophy departments and into mainstream computer science. And they affect everyone. Many of the students attracted to these courses are not technology majors, and many of the topics we discuss relate to ethical challenges that transcend the computer world.

Humans have always had a complex relationship with technology. Automobiles, for instance, changed the nature of life in America, where we live, how we work, what we can do with our leisure time. But they have also brought us traffic jams and contributed to global warming. The impact of information technology may be equally profound, and these are things we need to think about and study.

When you get to a hospital, they're going to want to push drugs, ... It's best to know they're not allergic to anything from the start.

There are times where you have an unconscious (person), and we don't know if it's stroke-related, if it's cardiac-related or if it's any medical condition, ... It's hard to figure out what the prognosis is.

I saw the Ark as an educational tool to take the message of alcohol and drug awareness into (catering) colleges, ... Our motto is `In service of others'. It was not about egos, not about people using the Ark to promote themselves.

Some people date the first debates about information technology and ethics to the 1950s, but the field really exploded in the 1990s.

We're not trying to tell students what they should think or what the right answers are, because many of these topics are very complex, they change rapidly and do not offer easy solutions. But we do hope people who take courses such as this will grow a little, mature their judgments and reflect more carefully on some important issues.

We need a lot more education for our dollar long before we start talking about giving these people more money.
