Marc Chagall
FameRank: 6

"Marc Zakharovich Chagall" was a Russian-List of French artists/French artist. Art critic Robert Hughes (critic)/Robert Hughes referred to Chagall as "the quintessential Lists of Jews associated with the visual arts/Jewish artist of the twentieth century" (though Chagall saw his work as "not the dream of one people but of all humanity"). An early modernism/modernist, he was associated with several major art movement/artistic styles and created works in virtually every artistic medium, including painting, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic, tapestries and fine art prints.

According to art historian Michael J. Lewis, Chagall was considered to be "the last survivor of the first generation of European modernists". For decades, he "had also been respected as the world's preeminent Jewish artist". Using the medium of stained glass, he produced windows for the cathedrals of Reims Cathedral/Reims and Metz Cathedral/Metz, United Nations Art Collection/windows for the UN, and the Hadassah Medical Center/Jerusalem Windows in Israel. He also did large-scale paintings, including part of the ceiling of the Palais Garnier/Paris Opéra.

One fine day as my mother was putting the bread in the oven, I went up to her and taking her by her flour-smeared elbow I said to her, "Mama I want to be a painter."

I adore the theater and I am a painter. I think the two are made for a marriage of love. I will give all my soul to prove this once more.

Great art picks up where nature ends.

All colors are the friends of their neighbors and the lovers of their opposites.

Only love interests me, and I am only in contact with things that revolve around love.

I work in whatever medium likes me at the moment.

When I am finishing a picture I hold some God-made object up to it / a rock, a flower, the branch of a tree or my hand / as a kind of final test. If the painting stands up beside a thing man cannot make, the painting is authentic. If there's a clash between the two, it is bad art.

Work isn't to make money; you work to justify life.

If I create from the heart, nearly everything works; if from the head, almost nothing.
