It's really dismaying. The answer to the nation's energy problem does not lie off the coast of Virginia.

If, all of a sudden, the Florida delegation drops out of the equation, it makes the rest of the country much more vulnerable. The coastal states that don't want to see [outer continental shelf] development really need to hang together, or they're going to hang separately.

The decline in sturgeon populations around the world is leading to pressures for poaching in this country. Caviar is very valuable. It's easy to smuggle. It's like drugs.

Once this happens, it's hard not to make other states expect to get a chunk of the change.

The notion that drilling for natural gas can solve the winter heating problem is a misconception. We are concerned about efforts to prey on people's fears about gas prices.
