The daughter of a Pullman porter, Ms. White was born in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in the Washington Heights neighborhood on Chicago's South Side. She graduated from Parker High School, and entered Clark Atlanta University/Clark College, graduating with a Bachelors of Arts in political science. White attained a Master of Arts in political science from the University of Chicago. After graduation, she worked as a Social Security (United States)/Social Security area director. She assumed the duties of International President at Alpha Kappa Alpha's 2002 Boulé in Orlando, Florida.

I started talking about writing a book in 1992. I was writing a lot, and I got an idea for a story in the middle of the night. I sat down and started writing dialogue.
