This is one more piece that will be added to the puzzle in the vetting of John Roberts' nomination.

Where does this leave us if our friends say, 'O.K., gay people, we're going to cut you loose because we have the religious right at our heels'? You don't make deals with bullies, and you don't cut your friends loose.

We firmly believe that a commitment to equality and fairness for all Americans, is a core qualification for a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court.

The right-wing has perpetuated the idea that people of color are overwhelmingly against marriage for same-sex couples - it is important that people see this for what it is - a half-baked myth that needs correcting. We are very pleased to have such strong coalition partners in this effort - together we can reach many communities who need to see that Marriage Equality Matters to people of color.

That's why we have a Constitution, to make sure nobody's fundamental rights are trampled because of the latest public opinion poll. Whether or not Gov. Schwarzenegger fulfills his promise to be a governor for all the people of California by signing this bill, we will continue to work within the judicial system until same-sex couples in California have full equality.

It's one more piece of the puzzle as we keep trying to find out who John Roberts is. Where does this fit in on his judicial philosophy and his view of the Constitution?

Once the next nominee is announced Lambda Legal will take the same approach we did with John Roberts. We will carefully review any material relevant to our community's core issues of concern and work to insure that during the Senate hearing the nominee is asked about, and addresses those issues.
