"Joseph Elliott Girardi" (born October 14, 1964) is an American professional baseball manager (baseball)/manager for the New York Yankees. Formerly a catcher, Girardi played for the Chicago Cubs, the Colorado Rockies, the New York Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals. In 2006, he managed the Florida Marlins and was named the National League Manager of the Year Award/Manager of the Year.

Those positions are wide open. We have a veteran in Reese and two young kids. To me, this camp is great because guys will have to push themselves.

He's a very talented offensive player that put up big numbers. He has not had the chance to probably catch enough games to make a fair judgment if he can be an everyday catcher. But the work ethic is there, and that's something that you cannot always teach.

That is a concern to me. We've [organizationally] talked among ourselves to protect these young pitchers. That's a luxury we have -- a lot of young pitchers. I'm going to do everything I can to protect the young pitchers. They have a future with this organization.
