"Jim Compton" was a member of the Seattle City Council, first elected in 1999. At his resignation in December 2005, he was chair of the Utilities & Technology Committee, vice chair of the Energy & Environmental Policy Committee, and a member of the Government Affairs & Labor Committee.

Born in Klamath Falls, Oregon, Compton earned his bachelor's degree in history at Reed College in 1964 and his master's degree at the Columbia University School of Journalism in 1969. He was a Fulbright Scholar.

Before being elected to the Council, Compton was best known for his career in journalism, working for NBC News out of Cairo and London from 1977 to 1984. He began working at Seattle's NBC affiliate KING-TV 5 in 1985. He produced The Compton Report, a top-rated weekly news program, during 10 of his 14 years at KING. He also served as a correspondent for The News Hour with Jim Lehrer.

In March 2014, Compton was found dead of an apparent heart attack in his car, after having dinner with friends the previous night. He was 72. He is survived by wife of 10 years, Carol, a Seattle lawyer.

We were led to believe a national emergency was created when the pipelines were shut down.

It was my decision to balance what was most important to people in South Mississippi with this all-of-a-sudden national crisis of not enough gas or diesel fuel.

I reluctantly agreed to pull half our transmission line crews off other projects and made getting the transmission lines to the Collins substations a priority.

If this site is that critical, ... then I suggest they provide the money to make sure the power supplies to the two pipelines will not be affected by the next hurricane. If this is a national issue, let's fix it now so that we can take care of the needs of the people in the Pine Belt.

They did it in 16 hours, and I consider the effort unprecedented.

You have to know the importance of this operation with three cabinet members coming to the site. If this site is that critical, then I suggest they provide the money to make sure the power supplies to the two pipelines will not be affected by the next hurricane.

In the future, the federal government needs to give us guidelines if this is such a national emergency so that I can work that in my plans.

I apologize to all parents, but I don't have any choices, ... We will work the the parents on an installment pay plan if necessary.
