It is an allegory. It is about things that have gone on in the past, things that are happening now and things that I am sure will happen in the future. I hope it works as a piece of entertainment and I hope audiences will talk about some of the ideas it discusses and the questions it asks.
James is a good actor, but he found the mask very constraining and claustrophobic.
For Alan, the material is 25 years old and there is a part of him that has moved on. It is disappointing he didn't want to be involved with it, but that's Alan. That's his personality.

She's an amazing actress. You need to believe the journey that character goes on, and I think Natalie lets you really believe it. She's your guide through the narrative. It's really about her presence and her intelligence.
I didn't set out to make it about any one particular government or regime. It's an allegorical film, but there are certain things I've obviously put in there that you can take.
