Part of the reason you get this contrast between personal conditions and perceptions of the national economy is because of incredible weak leadership on the national level. I don't think the disconnect would be as large as it is if people felt we had a national leadership that understands the challenges and has a coherent set of policies to address them.

Unions will never recover their historic 35 percent workforce. They may creep back up a little bit in some of these areas, because some employers are sophisticated enough to work alongside the union and utilize them as an ombudsman they don't have to pay for.
