Automakers have engineered numerous new safety technologies into SUVs over the past several model years to prevent rollovers.
If every SUV occupant wore their safety belt, it would save a thousand lives a year without doing anything to change technology, just using the existing technology.
Consumers are now focused on safety as never before.
It would add $3,000 to the cost of the typical vehicle with no identifiable health or environmental benefits.
We are pleased to offer consumers this technology, but consumers should make the choice rather than have it made for them. If they don't have children or pets and they don't feel they need it, they shouldn't be compelled to pay for it.
