It broke his heart because she started to consider that her home. But on the other hand he knew she was happy there, and there was no way he could have taken care of her by himself.
He was playing golf with his friends up until last summer. He stopped for the summer because it got too hot, but then by the time it cooled off he didn't have the strength to play anymore.
