FameRank: 6

"Denis Law" CBE is a Scotland/Scottish former Association football/football player, who enjoyed a long and successful career as a Forward (association football)/striker from the 1950s to the 1970s.

Law's career as a football player began at Second Division Huddersfield Town F.C./Huddersfield Town in 1956. After four years at Huddersfield, Manchester City F.C./Manchester City signed him for a transfer fee of £55,000, setting a new British record. Law spent one year there before Torino Calcio/Torino bought him for £110,000, this time setting a new record fee for a transfer between an English and an Italian club. Although he played well in Italy, he found it difficult to settle there and signed for Manchester United F.C./Manchester United in 1962, setting another British record transfer fee of £115,000.

He does not look good, but he is fighting. He is a fighter, I have always known that. I did get a shock, the man's not looking good.

I lost count of the times he let me down.

He was one of the best inside-forwards of his or any other generation.

Best truly hoped to be here (to receive the prize himself) but as more weeks passed, the more we knew it would be impossible.

From 1964 to 1969, he was the best player in the country, ... It's sad as hell, but I don't think we saw the best of him. I think he went on the blink at a time when he could have got even better.

Who ever wins today will win the championship no matter who wins.

In the long run, after knowing him for a long time, it's the best thing that could have happened because he would have been slightly like a vegetable and he wouldn't have liked that. It's awful to say it sometimes but it was a blessing.

He is still there and we have got to hope. We knew he was not well, this latest one is the most serious. I did get a shock — the man's not looking good.

It's an extremely sad day for the Best family.
