What we see now is the outbreak winding down to some extent. There have been fewer new cases per day occurring over the weekend and we have had no new cases today [Monday].

Although the condition of some ill residents has worsened and unfortunately four more have died, others are improving and we are confident this outbreak is under control.

This is the latest phase in the city's campaign to encourage natural lawn and garden care practices. As we enforce the bylaw, our inspectors will be firm but fair in promoting compliance and reducing the use of pesticides.

There have been, unfortunately, two additional deaths, both among residents.

These deaths are an unfortunate reminder that West Nile virus can be a serious health threat, although death is extremely rare.

The outbreak is confined to residents and staff and people closely associated with this one facility, so it's not a general public health risk.

I would not be surprised if there were additional deaths.
