"David Plews Coates" is an English former professional association football/footballer who played for Hull City A.F.C./Hull City (1956–60), Mansfield Town F.C./Mansfield Town (1960–64) and Notts County F.C./Notts County (1964–67) where he moved on to the coaching staff on retirement as a player. He later coached at Aston Villa F.C./Aston Villa, Leicester City F.C./Leicester City, Luton Town F.C./Luton Town and Stoke City F.C./Stoke City. He then moved into scouting, becoming chief scout at Oxford United F.C./Oxford United before performing the same role at Stoke, Plymouth Argyle F.C./Plymouth Argyle, Sunderland A.F.C./Sunderland and Bolton Wanderers F.C./Bolton Wanderers. He has also assisted with scouting for Preston North End F.C./Preston North End, Leeds United A.F.C./Leeds United, Portsmouth F.C./Portsmouth, Middlesbrough F. C./Middlesbrough and Newcastle United F.C./Newcastle United.

Coates is in height and played at inside forward or wing half.
