"Christopher Jonathan James Nolan" is an English-American film director, screenwriter, and producer. He has created several of the most critically and commercially successful films of the early 21st century. His nine films have grossed over $4.2 billion worldwide and garnered a total of 26 Academy Awards/Oscar nominations and six awards.

Having made his directorial debut with Following (1998), he gained considerable attention for his second feature, Memento (film)/Memento (2000). The acclaim of these independent films afforded Nolan the opportunity to make the big-budget thriller Insomnia (2002 film)/Insomnia (2002), and the more offbeat drama The Prestige (film)/The Prestige (2006); both were well-received critically and commercially. He found further popular and critical success with The Dark Knight Trilogy (2005–2012), Inception (2010) and Interstellar (film)/Interstellar (2014). Nolan has co-written several of his films with his brother, Jonathan Nolan, and runs the production company Syncopy Inc. with his wife Emma Thomas.

I wouldn't consider doing a Batman sequel unless I felt like it could be a great film, a film even better than the one we already made. But I certainly couldn't do another one on such a large scale right after having finished this one. I'm very glad to be doing something completely different.

I'm not really able to discuss it at the moment, but it's something I'm definitely interested in.

I think audiences get too comfortable and familiar in today's movies. They believe everything they're hearing and seeing. I like to shake that up.

I studied English Literature. I wasn't a very good student, but one thing I did get from it, while I was making films at the same time with the college film society, was that I started thinking about the narrative freedoms that authors had enjoyed for centuries and it seemed to me that filmmakers should enjoy those freedoms as well.

Somehow he just really fit the bill and had that fire in his eyes that made you believe this guy could make himself fit into a superhero role.

[The film's title star, Christian Bale, told me in June that he'd signed a multi-picture contract. When I caught up with] Batman Begins ... All I can tell you is, we're talking. There was quite an air of secrecy around the development of 'Batman Begins,' and there will be even more around the development of another film, if they move forward.
