Franco was born in Asunción, Paraguay. He comes from a poor background and grew up in a one-room, dirt-floor home. His father was a greenkeeper and caddy, and he has five brothers, all of whom became golf professionals. Carlos turned professional in 1986 and has played in many parts of the world. He has won more than twenty tournaments in Latin America, and from 1994 to 1999 he won five times on the Japan Golf Tour. He was the first rookie to surpass $1 million in earnings in a season and won the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year title. He has won four times on the PGA Tour, though his last professional win came in 2004. He has featured in the top 20 of the Official World Golf Rankings.

After struggling to stay on the PGA Tour, Franco also played on the Web.com Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamérica.

[You] have to play good, too.

That's good for me.

It's like a holiday, a vacation almost.

He's a big guy, you know? ... I talked to him the last 18 holes, 'Come on, man, come on. Why you too slow?' 'Your bag too heavy, Uncle.' I said, 'You eat too much every night.' I'll never forget that one.

I like to play the golf course because when I go to the range, I hit it, I hit it, I hit it, every shot is the same, ... He said, 'did you practice?' I said, 'yes, I practice fishing.'

I like the course. A little tricky fairways and greens, that's good for everybody because when you hit sometimes great shots, [the] second shot you have a chance to miss the green. Very similar for the greens because [there's] never a flat green. Every shot [is] always a surprise, the kick of the ball.

He wasn't nervous because he's won three times on the Nationwide Tour.
