FameRank: 6

"William Nathaniel "Buck" Showalter III" is an American Major League Baseball/Major League Baseball (MLB) Manager (baseball)/manager for the Baltimore Orioles. He has previously served as manager of the New York Yankees (1992–1995), Arizona Diamondbacks (1998–2000), and Texas Rangers (baseball)/Texas Rangers (2003–2006). He was formerly a professional baseball player and a television analyst for ESPN.

A three-time American League/American League (AL) Manager of the Year Award/Manager of the Year, Showalter has earned a reputation for building baseball teams into postseason contenders in short periods of time. He helped the Yankees rise from the bottom half of the American League East/AL East to first place before a 1994–95 Major League Baseball strike/players' strike prematurely ended the 1994 New York Yankees season/1994 campaign. Under his watch, the Diamondbacks made their first-ever playoff appearance in only its second year of existence. He left both professional sports league organization/franchises just prior to seasons when they won the World Series.

Years ago, that's how it was done. Guys came up as relievers and worked their way into being starters. C.J. has had his challenges as a starter, but I'd like to test drive that again before the end of the season.

We're just looking for quality pitchers, whether it's a left-hander or right-hander. Good left-handers play well in our park, but good right-handers do, too.

[Rookie pitcher Chris Young is on track to rejoin the rotation next week. Young has been resting a tired arm, but he's anxious to get back on the mound, where he is 11-7 with a 4.19 ERA in 29 starts.] He's ready to go, ... He thinks we're being too cautious.

A guy like Figgins gets [robbed]. He's got a position, but he can play all over. He's got to get a Gold Glove somewhere. They should have a utility man Gold Glove.

Everybody thinks their future is bright. We love the potential they have. It can just fortify the thinking more than anything else.

He had a little swelling starting there and that was a concern, but there wasn't anything he could say to stay in. We'll monitor him real closely, but I think we may have gotten real lucky. It gives you a reminder of what it takes to go out there. You're so close, and balls are flying off the bat.

They had seen him before and that's what makes it even more impressive. They obviously had a good idea what he was going to try to do.

Gerald is going to catch some games.

I think we're in pretty good shape catching-wise in the organization. Sandy has done as good or better than we could have hoped for. Rod is having a solid year. It creates a lot of good options for us.
