In the present age, alas! our pens are ravished by unlettered authors and unmannered critics, that make a havoc rather than a building, a wilderness rather than a garden. But, a lack! what boots it to drop tears upon the preterit?
"Aubrey Vincent Beardsley" was an English illustrator and author. His drawings in black ink, influenced by the style of Woodblock printing in Japan/Japanese woodcuts, emphasized the grotesque, the decadent, and the erotic. He was a leading figure in the Aestheticism/Aesthetic movement which also included Oscar Wilde and James A. McNeill Whistler. Beardsley's contribution to the development of the Art Nouveau and poster art/poster styles was significant, despite the brevity of his career before his early death from tuberculosis.
